So…Japan has already vowed to ignore any bluefin ban – even before any outcome has been reached at the CITES conference!
Therein lies the major problem with the whole system: if a country wants to catch a particular species, it knows it can do so without fear. Japan’s done it for years with whales, and intends doing it with Atlantic bluefin tuna until stocks are gone.
The IWC with 84 member-nations, CITES with 175, and the UN with 192 (virtually the entire world!), have no teeth! Is it time for the United Nations to be recreated as more of an ‘enforcer’ and less of a ‘suggester’?
A lack of teeth pitted against an abundance of dollars has time and time again shown there is only one viable option…let the offenders do as they please while these organizations perform the proverbial dog and pony show.
